Might be the most unique surface fish in the vast ocean of strange creatures. The color patterns on a dorado never cease to amaze fisherman. They often light up their colors just as they hit the deck of a boat.
The mahi fish can be found in tropical and subtropical waters. On the East Coast they range New Jersey to Florida and can be found consistently in Costa Rica, Baja and Hawaii. The dorado is often found near kelp paddies or objects in the water that attract bait fish but can also occasionally be found as free water swimmers. Once hooked these fish can put on one heck of an aerial display trying to break off the line they are attached to.
The current season brought very minimal counts to the So Cal coast. As a result, I had to paint one or two to make up for not catching any. I couldn't help but include one on my skateboard project this summer to hold me over!
